In SA this week, with the elections receding in the rear-view mirror, we are preoccupied with the difficult work of reconstituting a functioning government. A hodgepodge of ministers must move from campaigning mode to the less sexy toil of governance, apportioning roles and agreeing to new priorities. 

The tweeting masses want a DA pick kicked out for racist and homophobic remarks he made many years ago; the MK party wants the whole thing thrown out so they can take another run at it without alienating all potential partners; and president-elect Cyril Ramaphosa is presumably securing his allies in the wounded party. And in the mess, the new National Assembly convenes and plots a route for this multiple-personality disorder — sorry — government of national unity (GNU). For us and the 60-something countries holding elections in 2024, the focus is surely building a better future...
