WHEN we "support" a cause, it is almost always about engaging with something external to us. It seldom originates from our deepest wishes; the cause is usually the product of the wishes, desires, pain and suffering of others.Support for a cause is conditional and depends on factors such as one’s station in life, material wellbeing, self-interest, knowledge, intelligence, personality and worldview. It is conditional to the extent that it will be withdrawn if the conduct of the activists is, to you as a passive or active observer, alien and deviant.In its worst form, this kind of support condemns without understanding and is the main contribution of those who live in cocoons of self-righteous indignation.The Fees Must Fall campaign is a very good example.I must confess that much of the current debate about the campaign is, to me, both tired and tiring because, in the main, it is about something that is external to our immediate concerns and our understanding of what constitutes a civi...
