THE recent events involving the bullying of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan by the Hawks, the skirmish between Eskom and the Treasury, the reappointment of Dudu Myeni as chairwoman of the South African Airways board despite having sent its finances into a tailspin, and the assault by Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane on the independence of South African banks are an emphatic signal that we have formally entered a phase of institutional decay. We are fast turning into a mafia state run by a small clique that has no regard for independent institutions. Gordhan has shown a steely resolve in pushing back against nefarious attempts by those close to President Jacob Zuma to run roughshod over the public purse. There is a lot at stake.
