At last, South Africans now know who is bankrolling their politicians — though some parties remain suspiciously quiet about donations

With the election this month billed as the most fiercely contested since 1994, academics and analysts say laws governing private donations to political parties require added safeguards to ensure funding does not cross the thin line between lobbying and state capture.
Albert van Zyl of North-West University Business School said many parties were receiving funding from high net worth individuals, which was a vote of confidence in the system, but open lobbying could be perceived as a bid to control politics for commercial ends...
